Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a toddler. Ford began performing in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try, applied and won a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
